The Northern Sydney Endocrine Centre is an established, evidenced based practice, located adjacent to Royal North Shore Hospital in St Leonards, Sydney. We are a multidisciplinary practice comprising endocrinologists, diabetes educators and dietitians.

We are a large centre, with many endocrinologists who each have a specific disease focus. Particular areas of expertise of our doctors include: Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, Gestational diabetes, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome and Insulin Resistance, Reproductive endocrinology and fertility, Obesity, Pituitary tumors and pituitary diseases, Thyroid diseases and thyroid cancer, Adrenal diseases and finally Paediatric endocrinology.


We have highly trained endocrinologists who specialise in type 1 diabetes. Drs Sally-Anne Duke and Sarah Glastras have a special interest and experience in type 1 diabetes with appointments at both Royal North Shore Hospital and North Shore Private Hospital. Our team of endocrinologists together with our diabetes educators and dietitians providing the latest in diabetes-related technology and management. Our paediatric endocrinologist Dr Neville Howard is an experienced paediatric endocrinologist in the management of type 1 diabetes and ensures smooth transition to adult endocrinologists within our practice. Disorders of the thyroid gland are common and require extensive experience to be well managed. Our team of endocrinologist manage all aspect of thyroid disease, both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism, nodular thyroid disease and thyroid cancer. Thyroid cancer is a particular speciality of our practice. We work closely with our dedicated, high volume endocrine surgeons and nuclear medicine departments to ensure the latest, best practice in the management of thyroid cancer. In particular, Dr Anna Story, Dr Monique Costin and Dr Natalie Yap are part of the Royal North Shore Hospital Endocrine Tumor Multidisciplinary group that regularly meets to review and provide the highest level of expertise in the care of our patients.
Osteoporosis most commonly occurs in postmenopausal women, though a number of endocrine conditions can be contributory. Our endocrinologists are experienced at investigating and managing osteoporosis and are always willing to discuss its long-term management and potential complications of the condition as well as the treatment with you. Primary hyperparathyroidism is a condition that can be associated with osteoporosis and uncommonly it can be associated with a variety of genetic syndromes. Our endocrinologists are up to date in investigating and managing hyperparathyroidism, and work with tertiary genetic and surgical teams teams to appropriately manage both typical and higher risk patients. Our doctors have access to the latest radiology and investigation techniques. We work with high volume specialist endocrine surgeons to ensure the best patient outcome.
The pituitary gland, or “master gland” is the hormonal control centre, constantly receiving signals and producing hormones. Abnormalities of pituitary function are increasingly recognised to play an important and complex role in many conditions. Primary disorders of the pituitary gland include tumours, damage from radiation, infection, inflammation or head injury. Pituitary tumours are prevalent, found in up to 1 in every 5 people, but identifying those causing clinical problems requires expertise. All our endocrinologists are trained in the recognition and management of pituitary disease. Dr Monique Costin also has a pituitary focus within our practice. Dr Costin has completed a research fellowship in pituitary tumours at the Garvan Institute. She regularly participates in the Sydney Pituitary Collaborative Group meetings.
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is common in women of reproductive age. Women with this condition may present with menstrual cycle irregularity, acne or unwanted body hair. It can be associated with difficulty losing weight. PCOS can be underpinned by insulin resistance. All our endocrinologists have extensive clinical experience in diagnosing and managing this condition. Management of PCOS is particularly pertinent in women planning pregnancy and should be well managed leading into any pregnancy.
Drs Rachel Bradbury and Sarah Glastras have a particular interest in this area. Dr Bradbury has appointments at Westmead Hospital and The Mater Hospital. Dr Sarah Glastras has appointments at Royal North Shore Hospital and North Shore Private Hospital. Our dietitian, Di Munns has a longstanding interest and experience in advising patients about the lifestyle management for PCOS.
Endocrinology is a specialty of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases related to hormones, including fertility. As many as 1 in 6 couples have trouble falling pregnant after 12 months of trying and are recommended to seek a medical opinion. The reason for the delay may be due to female and/or male infertility. Our endocrinologists will arrange appropriate investigations and advise on best management. Some patients may require specialised fertility treatment that can be organised via Dr Rachel Bradbury who is an IVF consultant actively involved in fertility research.
Our endocrinologists work closely with obstetric teams to ensure that pre-existing conditions such as thyorid cancer, PCOS, type 1 or 2 diabetes, obesity and pituitary disorders are all well managed leading into and during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes is diagnosed in at least 5% of pregnancies, with age pre-pregnancy weight, PCOS and ethnicity known to increase the risk. Gestational diabetes is a particular focus of doctors Sarah Glastras, Rachel Bradbury and Natalie Yap. Dr Sarah Glastras chairs the Northern Sydney Local Health District working group for Complex pregnancy and medical Complications. Locally our doctors have appointments at the Royal North Shore Hospital, North Shore Private Hospital and the Mater Hospital.
Obesity is a complex endocrine condition. Our dedicated endocrinologists and dietitians have experience with and access to the latest obesity treatments. In particular, Dr Sarah Glastras has a special focus in obesity and has active research pursuits in this area.
Our practice has the advantage in that children and adolescents with an endocrine condition can transfer seamlessly from paediatric to adult care. Dr Neville Howard, former senior staff member of paediatric endocrinology at Children’s Hospital Westmead is part of our team. He has decades of experience managing the breadth of paediatric endocrinology and in particular is expert in the management of type 1 diabetes, growth and puberty issues and endocrine tumors. Our diabetes educator, Ms Carolyn Judge has years of experience managing children with type 1 diabetes and also works at the SAN Hospital and Children’s Hospital, Westmead.
Adrenal disease and adrenal carcinoma require a high degree of experience and access to specialist pathologists, radiologists and oncologists to achieve the best outcome. Our doctors are all experienced in dealing with adrenal diseases such as Addison’s disease and feed into the Endocrine Multidisciplinary Tumor Clinic at Royal North Shore Hospital to provide the latest and best options for our patients.
Carolyn Judge is a vastly experienced diabetes educator, with appointments at Westmead Children’s Hospital and association with many endocrinologists in Sydney. She is able to provide the latest in diabetes related technologies including Insulin Pump Therapy, Insulin Pump Upgrades and also Continuous Glucose Monitoring. Carolyn assists in the transition of our paediatric diabetes patients to the care of our adult endocrinologists.

We are a group practice with specialised areas of endocrinology. We are a multi-disciplinary one-stop shop with in-house allied health practitioners. Our practice caters for patients of all ages and includes a paediatric endocrinologist who sees our youngest patients and allows for a smooth transition to adult endocrinologists within the same practice. Priority is given to urgent cases. If this is your situation, please have your referring doctor call us or fax a referral, 02 9906 7839.

Referral from your GP will be valid for 12 months from your initial visit while a referral from a specialist will be valid for 3 months from your initial visit. A current and valid referral will enable you to claim your Medicare rebate. For diabetes education and/or dietician appointments, an Allied Health Referral will enable you to claim your Medicare rebate.
